BIO
Bongani Umculi, is a PE(Gqeberha)-born singer, who sings African and contemporary Xhosa music. His influences are diverse music genres – like African Jazz, Mbaqanga, Maskandi, international Jazz and contemporary Afrikan music. He grew up listening to Stimela, Cheek to Cheek, Chicco, Splash, Patricia Majalisa, Brenda Fassie,Yvonne Chaka Chaka – later to Ringo, Mankunku Ngozi, Andile Yenana, Michael Franks, Grover WashingtonJnr. etc.
I am a vocalist interested in different african sounds. I compose music with Xhosa Folklore background and contemporary sound.
musical journey
In 1997 a gospel group named PE Melodious Singers (cofounded) won ON THE GO SHOW music Competition held in the PE Opera House. The 2 songs that won the competition were composed by Bongani Malahle.
Upon the return from Johannesburg, Bongani worked with different local groups and youth development. One of his passions is
developing youth through music. It all started when he joined a local choir called Siyaphambili Gospel Group in the early 90’s. His passion for music and youth was evoked and he never looked back ever since.
